Friday July 15 Horncastle

Last nights sunset, looking west from the Barn
The weather is much more overcast today and slightly cooler which hasn’t worried us as we have been playing “tourists”, with our destination of Horncastle.
We just ambled along, loving the rolling hills dotted with trees and the numerous small villages with their churches and wonderful old brick houses. This is real English countryside and I can’t get enough of it!!!
Horncastle proved to be a real treat, an historic market town which was once the centre of horse markets. The streets are lined with heritage buildings and the whole place has a busy yet friendly atmosphere. We really enjoyed walking the town and popping into the shops, including many antique shops.
Returned home via a different route which took us through Spilsby. Along the way I saw a church high on a hill at West Keal. Drove up a wee lane to the church and what a view, right across the Fends to Boston with the Stump Church very prominent.
Back home to Bob the butcher for some Boston sausages for dinner tonight, and a visit from the “land lords”!!! Good to have an evening with Steve and Kathy.
Myers, it's been around for over 100 years, and by the look of the cakes I can imagine why.
Only bought a small loaf of bread though!

Refections in the bakery window.

Streets of Horncastle

Such a selection of vegetables at the green grocers stores..surprised to see the Scarlet Runner beans for sale.
Also lots of flowers.

A rather grand entrance to Scrivelsby Grange
The church at West Keal, high on the hill.

There was something slightly comical about these headstones - a bit like "two's company, three's a crowd"!!

The view from the church, across to Boston.

Thanks Jen and Richard, There is something special about wandering around these old graveyards and thinking what the world was like when they died.

How lovely all of them, yummo to the cakes etc. You were very restrained. You found time to add a texture, I'm very impressed.
